RedVPNSafe Internet

RedVPN for
Windows

A small command-line client. It runs without administrator rights and gives every program on the PC a local proxy on 127.0.0.1:1080.

Install

Open PowerShell and run:

irm https://vpn.red/dist/cli/install.ps1 | iex

One 64-bit program (Windows 10 or later; it also runs on Arm PCs through Windows' own emulation). It goes to %LOCALAPPDATA%\RedVPN and that folder is added to your user PATH: open a new terminal window afterwards. Remove it by deleting that folder and its entry in PATH.

Use

redvpn up # connect; prints the proxy address when ready
curl.exe --socks5-hostname 127.0.0.1:1080 https://ip-geo.redvpn.workers.dev/ # prints: ok
redvpn status # or: redvpn status --json
redvpn down

Point a browser or any application that speaks SOCKS5 at the proxy; in Firefox that is Settings, Network Settings, Manual proxy configuration, SOCKS Host 127.0.0.1, port 1080, SOCKS v5, and tick Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5 so names are resolved on the far side. If port 1080 is already taken, redvpn up prints the port it used instead; --port picks one. Type curl.exe, not curl, in PowerShell: curl there is a different command.

Your plan

A new PC starts on the free plan, like a new phone. To use the plan you bought on vpn.red or in the app, sign in with the same e-mail address:

redvpn login # e-mail, then the 6-digit code we send you
redvpn account # plan, remaining free data, account code

Already have a device id from another install? redvpn login --cid <id> adopts it. The id and the session live in %LOCALAPPDATA%\RedVPN\state; redvpn logout drops the session.

Manual setup

If the servers that hand out the connection settings cannot be reached from your network, sign in at vpn.red/me, click Download VPN profile (it saves redvpn-profile.json) and load it:

redvpn import redvpn-profile.json

The file is checked the same way a downloaded configuration is (it is signed; an edited or foreign file is refused), then stored in %LOCALAPPDATA%\RedVPN\state. A profile older than the one already stored is refused unless you add --force. redvpn up still looks for newer settings whenever it can reach them.

Whole PC

Routing all traffic from the PC through RedVPN (not only what you point at the proxy) is not available on Windows yet. Use the proxy above.

Verify the download

The installer checks the program against /dist/cli/SHA256SUMS before it installs anything. To do it by hand:

curl.exe -fsSLO https://vpn.red/dist/cli/redvpn-windows-x86_64.exe
curl.exe -fsSLO https://vpn.red/dist/cli/SHA256SUMS
(Get-FileHash redvpn-windows-x86_64.exe -Algorithm SHA256).Hash.ToLower()   # compare with the line in SHA256SUMS

The program is not code-signed yet, so a copy downloaded in a browser may show a Windows SmartScreen warning; the installer above does not trigger it. Version 0.3.0:

71e9b0f1d4d5ef746a18eadd04fec38d4347d556b8e24442f436b78a1a44df3c redvpn-windows-x86_64.exe

Older releases stay at /dist/cli/<version>/.
